Iowa Pigs Briefly Taste Freedom After Semi Trailer Slides Off Road

(Story County, IA) -- A semi trailer loaded with 100-hogs tipped over this (Monday) morning in central Iowa, giving a handful of pigs a brief chance at escaping their ultimate destiny. The Story County Sheriff's Office says the driver lost control on gravel on the shoulder of Highway 65, and slid into a ditch north of Gilbert.

The driver, 48-year-old John Swants of Keota, was not hurt. The Sheriff's Office office says 12 hogs were injured and euthanized at Iowa State's Veterinary Medicine College in Ames. The sheriff's office says some hogs escaped the trailer but were corralled. The majority were contained and transferred to another trailer.
