DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus is being detected in Iowa's largest county.

Polk County Public Health says the variant infected a vaccinated Des Moines area adult who developed a mild case of COVID-19.

They say the person had not gotten a vaccination booster before becoming infected.

Public Health also says the infected person had not recently traveled to an area with wide transmission of the new variant.

The Polk County Health Department says it contacted the individual and is working to contact close contacts.

The Omicron variant was first detected in Iowa last week in a Black Hawk County child.
