(Des Moines, IA) -- December 15th's derecho cost the state of Iowa an estimated $700 million, and over $1 billion in total.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the storm was one of 20 separate disasters in the U.S. last year that caused over a billion dollars worth of damages.

The 20 disasters resulted in 668 deaths, and totaled $145 billion.

2021 ends as third costliest year on record, with the second most natural disasters costing $1 billion or more.

Only 2020 had more billion-dollar disasters, which brought 22 such events; however, 2020 was less costly, totaling $120 billion.
