Crashes, spinouts, stalled cars keep Des Moines Police busy in snow storm

(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines Police are keeping busy because of the snow storm. The city has an official total of 14.3 inches of new snow.

From Noon Friday to 6:00 Saturday morning, Des Moines Police were called to 44 property damage crashes, 4 injury crashes, 12 hit and runs, and 47 calls for help for stalled cars.

This photo was taken on Fleur just south of Gray's Lake Park near Bell. A semi was stalled by ice on the hill, blocking both lanes of southbound Fleur,. Several cars approached, then were unable to get around the semi, and some were also stalled on the icy hill.

The driver in the white car was trying to turn left onto Bell to bypass Fleur, but was also stalled through several traffic light cycles on the glare ice. The man on foot trying to push the car was slipping and sliding and unable to make any headway.

Another car with all wheel drive gave the white car a push to clear the backed-up intersection.
