(Des Moines, IA) -- The Des Moines Police Department is investigating a drive by shooting that hospitalized three people Sunday morning.

DMPD Sergeant Paul Parizek tells WHO 13 shots rang out downtown, just after 2 am Sunday morning in the 100 block of Water Street.

Witnesses on the scene say someone opened fire from a moving vehicle, hitting two people. One person from the sidewalk returned fire, and struck one of the people in the car.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

"It started with a fight somewhere in a business on Court Avenue. We aren't sure which bar yet," said Parizek.

He says the shooting happened among a group of people who knew each other.

"Gunfire in our neighborhoods is a symptom of a greater problem in our community," says Parizek. "It's not just something we can throw a hundred cops at. We need to start figuring out, as a community, why people are choosing guns as the solution to their problems."

The three in the hospital are two men and one woman. All are expected to survive.

No arrests have yet been made.
