National Weather Service Confirms Winterset Tornado Was An EF-4

(Winterset, IA) -- The National Weather Service says the tornado that tore through Winterset Saturday and killed six people was an EF-4.

National Weather Service investigators say the tornado was 800 yards wide, was on the ground for nearly 70 miles, and packed maximum wind speeds of 170 MPH. The path of the tornado is shown on a NWS graphic below.

It's the first confirmed EF-4 tornado in Iowa since 2013, and the deadliest Iowa tornado since 2008. It's the second-longest tornado path in Iowa since 1980.
