Montana Man Pleads Guilty To Scamming Iowa Derecho Victim Out Of $10,000

(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- A man from Montana pleads guilty to scamming a derecho victim in Cedar Rapids out of thousands of dollars. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa says William Hurlbut Jr. of Belgrade, Montana was convicted Thursday of mail fraud. He faces 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Hurlbut's accused of coming to Cedar Rapids in August of 2020 and claiming to be a handyman. He's accused of promising to fix over $10,000 worth of damage to a person's home but instead taking the insurance money for himself.
