An Honor For Omaha World War II Navy Hero Moves Closer

The Office of Nebraska U.S. Senator Deb Fischer announces a bill advances out of a Senate committee that would name Omaha's Benson Post Office branch the "Petty Officer First Class Charles Jackson French Post Office."

A WWII hero, French rescued 15-crew members when their ship came under fire in 1942 in the Pacific Theater.

French swam for eight hours at night in shark infested waters rescuing the men by tugging a life raft.

French, who is black, did receive a letter of commendation from famed WW II Pacific Admiral William "Bull" Halsey, but now a longtime effort to honor him in a bigger way gets closer to reality in 2022.
