(Grundy County, Iowa) -- A hearing on a new trial motion for the man convicted of murdering an Iowa State Patrol Trooper is scheduled for this afternoon.

Michael Lang was found guilty of killing sergeant Jim Smith during a standoff outside his Grundy Center home in April of last year. Lang's attorneys have filed a motion arguing Lang deserves a new trial, saying there's not enough evidence to support Lang's first-degree murder conviction.

If the judge denies that motion, Lang faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
