Omaha City Hall Veteran To Retire

The Mayor's office announces Dr. Franklin Thompson will retire as the City of Omaha Human Rights and Relations Director, bringing to a close a two decade career in city government.

Thompson was elected to the Omaha City Council in 2001, representing District 6.

He served until 2017 and was then named Human Rights and Relations Director by Mayor Jean Stothert.

“Dr. Thompson’s unique expertise in human relations, race relations, multicultural education, and counseling has been very beneficial,” said the Mayor. “I am grateful for his friendship and his service to our city.”

A news release from the Mayor's office points out Thompsons’s annual salary is $151,507.

His estimated monthly pension will be $5,450, and his last day will be July 29th.

He has been a member of the UNO faculty since 1993 and plans to devote more time to teaching and promoting the release of his autobiography, "Confessions of a Murphy's Child," which comes out in September.

A national search for a successor will begin.

The Mayor has appointed Assistant Human Rights and Relations Director Gerald Kuhn to be interim director.
