(Des Moines, IA) -- The Animal Rescue League is caring for 46-cats and kittens, taken from a northern Iowa home. The A-R-L says the cats, removed yesterday (Wednesday), were in poor health, malnourished, and infested with fleas and ear mites.

The ARL says the floor in the home was covered in feces and the ammonia odor was so strong, staffers could only work in the home for short periods of time.

The ARL says the kittens are in the worst shape, many are think with infected eyes.

The ARL says their numbers are high right now. The non-profit is caring for more than 1,000 cats, dogs, and other animals.
