Omaha woman arrested in connection to double fatal Bellevue crash

(Bellevue, NE) -- An Omaha woman is arrested in connection to a double fatal crash in Bellevue.

The Sarpy County Attorney's Office says on Wednesday, 33 year old Maria Diaz Castelan was arrested for felony motor vehicle homicide charges stemming from a motor vehicle crash that killed 23 year old Kirsten Fritz and 30 year old Victor Munoz Garcia.

Around 8:15 the night of September 23rd, Bellevue Police and Fire Departments were called out to a crash at Ft. Crook Road and Cornhusker. After investigation, officers determined a Honda Odyssey, driven by Castelan, was southbound on Ft. Crook Road when she drove through the red light at Cornhusker Road and hit an eastbound GMC Envoy, driven by Fritz. Investigators say the Honda Odyssey also hit an eastbound Kia Sorento, driven by 38 year old Sally Harrington. The crash injured Harrington and her passengers. They went to the hospital and were later released.

Alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the crash. “This was a horrific motor vehicle crash that killed two people and injured three others,” said Chief Deputy Sarpy County Attorney Bonnie Moore. “These types of crashes are preventable with safe driving. No measure of justice will bring the victims back. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims.”
