(Iowa) -- Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller announces that Iowa is joining 39 other states in a $391.5 million dollar settlement against Google for its privacy practices.

Iowa will receive $6.17 million dollars from the settlement, the largest privacy settlement in U.S. history. The 40 states attorneys general opened the investigation into Google in 2018, arguing that Google records users movements despite users telling it not to do so, violating state consumer protection laws. The settlement requires that Google be more transparent with users about its tracking practices.

Other states included in the settlement include Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
