Much of Iowa Could See the Season's First Measurable Snow

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Much of Iowa could see the first measurable snow of the season starting late Monday night into early Tuesday morning.

"Especially during Tuesday morning's commute--it's likely going to be slick out there. We're looking at snowfall accumulations by the end of the day on Tuesday of one to three inches," says National Weather Service Meteorologist Rod Donovan.

"At least through the overnight and morning hours. We may get a little melting through the day on Tuesday, but overall it's likely going to mean some treacherous travel," he says.

While the snow in the forecast starting early Tuesday isn't all that unusual for this time of year--the cold weather on either side of it's a different matter.

"Ground temperatures are certainly below what we'd normally expect this time of year. We would expect snow by this time of year, but the fact that it may stick, and stay for several days--that's certainly unusual," Donovan says.

The Weather Service says some parts of Northern Iowa, where the snow started falling Monday, could see as much as four inches of snow by late Tuesday.

As for the cold later this week--low temperatures starting Thursday night and through the weekend could drop into the lower teens, with highs in the mid- to upper 20's.
