(Iowa) -- Iowa ranks near the bottom of the U.S. in hospital safety in a new study by the Leapfrog Group.

Leapfrog evaluated hospitals nationwide according to 22 metrics of patient safety, including quality of care, variety of medical procedures available, hygiene practices, and more.

Iowa ranks 48th in hospitals receiving an A grade, with just 3-percent of hospitals getting A grades.

Only Vermont, North Dakota, and the District of Columbia ranked lower, with each having no A ranked hospitals.

New Hampshire led the nation, with 54-percent of its hospitals ranking.
