Des Moines Police Make Arrest in City's First Homicide of the Year

(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines Police make an arrest in the city's first homicide of the year.

Police say 24 year-old Marlin Thomas is under arrest facing multiple charges in the shooting death of 18 year-old Jaquez Allen. Investigators say Thomas and an accomplice went to the apartment complex on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway to confront Allen over a debt. Police say during the confrontation, Thomas shot Allen in the upper arm but Allen was eventually able to get control of Thomas' gun and fired it in self defense, hitting both attackers and causing non-lethal injuries. Allen later died of his wounds.

Thomas faces the following charges:

  • Attempted Murder
  • 1st Degree Robbery
  • Going Armed with Intent
  • Trafficking in Stolen Weapons
  • Felon in Possession of a Firearm
