(Lincoln, NE) -- A bill has been introduced that would create a human breast milk bank in Nebraska. Legislative Bill 12 creates a bank that would be managed by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and would accept and provide human breast milk for infants. The bill calls for all breast milk provided to be screened upon collection. Obtaining donor breast milk can be a challenge in Nebraska, the closest banks are in Iowa and Colorado. An additional proposed measure, Legislative Bill 13, would require the Medical Assistance Act to cover the cost of obtaining breast milk.
