A Winter Storm Forecast for Iowa Still Packing Some Uncertainty

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa's bracing for another shot of winter weather.

"We're still looking at about four to six inches throughout a good share of Central to Northeast and Northern Iowa. There may be a band of heavier snow that's just north of Intestate 80," says National Weather Service Meteorologist Roger Vachalek.

He says there's still some uncertainty with the storm system including it's timing--when and where relatively warm temperatures will dip below that rain-versus-snow transition on Thursday.

"With a band of moderate to heavy snow forming right in a one to three county area, that could dictate a few more inches of snow falling over one area than another," Vachalek says.

Through the day Thursday, the Weather Service says Des Moines over to the Quad Cities could get three to four inches of snow, four to six are possible in Ames and Cedar Rapids, and up to eight inches in the northeast corner of the state.

This latest storm comes with March well into it's second week.

"This is our transition season, so we can always get some fairly big snows in March, and unfortunately sometimes in April," he says.

A Winter Storm Watch for some of Central, and all of Northern and Northwest Iowa will be effect from Thursday morning through late Thursday night. There's a Winter Weather Advisory across the same timeframe for the northwest corner of Iowa.
