University of Iowa to Repay $2 Million in Settlement

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The University of Iowa is reimbursing the state of Iowa in a racial discrimination lawsuit settlement involving the school's football program.

About half of this week's more than $4 million settlement was to come from the state's general fund.

University president Barbara Wilson says she's directing the athletics department to pay back the money.

This week's settlement drew widespread criticism, prompting members of the Iowa House to draft a bill mandating athletics departments at the regents universities to repay the state for settlement costs in in the state's budget.

State Auditor Rob Sand, who's also a member of the State Appeals Board, voted against the settlement saying University of Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta should step down.

The University of Iowa was sued by 12 Black former members of the Hawkeyes football team.
