Man Arrested After Standoff with Police in Downtown Des Moines Tuesday

(Des Moines, IA) -- A man is in custody after a standoff with law enforcement officers Tuesday.

The Des Moines Police Department says deputies from the Polk County Sheriff's Office recognized a suspect known to have an arrest warrant around 11:30am in downtown Des Moines. DMPD says during the attempt to arrest the suspect, he pulled a knife and threatened deputies. The Des Moines Police Department blocked traffic in the area as officers worked to de-escalate the situation.

The suspect eventually surrendered the knife and was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.
