(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- Nearly a week after Hy-Vee announced they're closing their First Avenue store in the Wellington Heights neighborhood of Cedar Rapids, the city continues to work to fill the gap the closure will leave.
Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell says despite Council's disappointment with the company, dialogue continues with Hy-Vee, and other grocers on options for the area.
At least one member of Cedar Rapids City Council didn't hold back her concerns about Hy-Vee's actions at Tuesday council meeting. Cedar Rapids Councilwoman Ashley Vanorny says she feels like "it’s time for a better partner who understands the industry that they’re in."
Hy-Vee signed a new five-year lease for the store just six-months ago after lobbying by the city staff.
The store is slated to close June 23rd.
