(Rock Island, IL) -- The new year will bring a new fee for Rock Island residents to pay.

Council is approving the end of the gas tax and the implementation of a new Street Improvement Utility Fee to fund road repairs and maintenance.

The new monthly fee is based on the size of a person’s lot ranging from $7 for the smallest properties up to $30 for the largest.

City leaders say the fee will generate $1.5-million a year more than the gas tax did for residential road improvements.
