(Iowa) -- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will be conducting controlled burns in three central Iowa counties this spring.

The DNR will conduct burns in the following wildlife areas:

  • Colo and Hendrickson, in Story County
  • McCoy and Harrier Marsh, in Boone County
  • Big Creek, in Polk County

The DNR says the goal of the burns is to control invasive plant species, lower the potential for wildfires, improve the habitat for wildlife. The size of the burns will vary, ranging from a small number of acres to up to several hundred acres.
