Des Moines Police have identified the officer and suspect involved in an officer-involved shooting last week on the South side.

Police say 19-year-old Jose Rodriguez-Sanchez was fleeing from another officer that witnessed him commit assault. The victim was later identified as his mother.

Senior Police Officer Chad Ruroden ordered him to stop, leading Rodriguez-Sanchez to charge at him and violently assault him.

Ruroden then fired his handgun, hitting Rodriguez-Sanchez in the upper torso. Ruroden fell to the ground, and Rodriguez-Sanchez continued to assault him until other officers arrived. It took officers deploying pepper spray and a taser to subdue him.

Police also say Rodriguez-Sanchez attempted to disarm Ruroden of his handgun during the assault. Ruroden suffered head and jaw injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

Rodriguez-Sanchez is charged with:

  • Assault on a Peace Officer with intent to inflict serious injury (Class D Felony)
  • Disarming a Peace Officer (Class D Felony)
  • Domestic Abuse Assault - 1st offense (Simple Misdemeanor)
  • Interference with Official Acts (Simple Misdemeanor)

Police say additional information, including body-worn camera footage will be shared when it becomes available for release.
