A bill that would restrict the use of cell phones in Iowa classrooms is heading to the desk of Governor Kim Reynolds.

House File 782 overwhelmingly passed the Iowa House on Tuesday and would require Iowa school districts to put policies in place to limit the use of phones and other personal electronic devices during classroom instructional time.

The Senate amended the original bill from the House, clarifying that the Iowa Department of Education director has until May 1 to distribute a model policy to school districts, which then must enact their own policies by July 1.

The policy would take effect for the 2025-26 school year.
