(Knoxville, IA) -- An investigation is underway into a fatal, officer-involved shooting Thursday night in Knoxville.

Knoxville Police say they were responding to a domestic disturbance call in the 300 block of South Roche Street where they found a man assaulting a woman.

An officer shot the man during the incident. He was taken to a Des Moines hospital, where he later died. The female was also taken to the hospital, where she was treated and released.

Police say the area was also evacuated due to a gas leak that occurred before they arrived. Alliant Energy was able to cap the line and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is investigating the fatal shooting.
