(Iowa) -- The Iowa Department of Education is looking for sponsors for a federal summer meal and snack program sites.
Last year, more than 500 locations across Iowa served over 3 million healthy meals to children and teens in need during the summer months through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Summer Food Service Program. Typical sponsors include schools, non-profit organizations, municipal organizations, and camps. To qualify as a site, a location must be located in a low-income neighborhood or most serve primarily low-income children.
Sites for the program may be selected to coincide with locations where low-income children and teens are expected to spend their time, such as parks, recreation programs, and summer enrichment programs. Many sites will offer meals to be eaten on-site, though some may offer meals for pickup or delivery.
Organizations interested in sponsoring a site can learn more at the Iowa Department of Education's Summer Food Service Program website or by contacting Stephanie Dross by phone at (515)281-4760 or by email at stephanie.dross@iowa.gov.
