(Iowa) -- Ten state beaches in Iowa are not recommended for swimming due to elevated bacteria levels.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says recent testing found high levels of E. coli and, in some cases, algal toxins at beaches including:

  • Backbone Beach
  • Black Hawk Beach
  • Lake Darling
  • Lake of Three Fires Beach
  • Nine Eagles Beach
  • North Twin Lake East Beach
  • North Twin Lake West Beach
  • Pine Lake South Beach
  • Pleasant Creek Beach
  • Prairie Rose Beach

The DNR monitors water quality at state-owned beaches across Iowa, with testing conducted weekly from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
