(Des Moines, IA) -- The Des Moines Mayor and City Council will vote tonight on whether to give themselves a pay raise.

The proposal calls for the mayor's salary to go from $70,000 a year to just over $81,000 a year. Council members pay would go up by nearly $3,000 annually to $37,975.

The pay hikes come as the city faces a $17 million dollar shortfall in Fiscal Years 2028 and 2029.

The salary increases require a total of three approvals by the council before they take effect.
