Omaha Police say they have arrested two people in Des Moines in connection with a street takeover last month near the Omaha airport that resulted in an officer in his cruiser being swarmed and his line of sight blinded by a fire extinguisher sprayed on the windshield.
Officers responded to reports of a large crowd and numerous vehicles blocking an intersection.
Omaha investigators say as an officer arrived, he turned on the lights of his marked police cruiser to disperse the crowd. At that time, an unidentified male wearing a red mask approached the cruiser, filming the officer on a cell phone while making obscene gestures.
Immediately after, multiple suspects rushed the cruiser.
Police say the individuals began aggressively shaking and bouncing the police vehicle by slamming down on the hood.
Simultaneously, a suspect sprayed a fire extinguisher directly at the cruiser, completely blinding the officer's forward and side vision.
For his safety, the officer was forced to reverse the vehicle and retreat to a secure location to await backup. The suspects left the scene in unknown vehicles shortly after.
Through investigative techniques and detective work, Omaha Police say two primary suspects were identified, both residing in Iowa.
On June 26th, an Omaha detective interviewed a 16-year-old male in Des Moines, who admitted to spraying the fire extinguisher at the officer’s cruiser.
He was street-released to a guardian and faces charges of obstructing a police officer and disorderly conduct.
Omaha Police say this past Monday, 19-year-old Tayden Madison of Des Moines was booked into jail in Omaha for an outstanding warrant for obstructing a police officer and disorderly conduct.
Omaha Police are still seeking information on the other individuals involved.
