In light of the Federal government shutdown and the word that negotiations aren't going well, a quote that I think would help to bear in mind:
"My definition of 'win' is not binary. It is not a zero-sum game. Negotiation that leads to a winner and a loser rarely leads to a successful transaction, or another one down the road."
- Sam Zell
Sam Zell is an exceptionally successful investor -- exactly the kind of person whose mindset I think Americans want when they vote for a "successful businessperson" as President. I'm not suggesting that Zell should run for the office, but I do think Zell's mindset on the issue beats the absolutist mindset that at least one branch of government is sending to the discussions.
