Gardening over Labor Day Weekend

Since Labor Day weekend usually marks the end of summer, our attention turns to the next season which happens to be our favorite.

Chrysanthemums are starting to make their ways into garden centers. This weekend Jessica is hoping to purchase a few for some containers. If you are looking for a perennial mum, search out plant tags that are labeled as 'garden mums'. Other mums that you find in the garden centers now might or might not be perennials since it depends on whether that plant has had a chance to establish, the plant's location (as an example- depending on if it is in the middle of a landscape without protection or near the south side of your house), if it has been well mulched or not, or even the severity of winter.

Other Fall tasks that we have on our radar is saving seed for the upcoming growing season. Zinnia, marigold, and tomatoes are some of the easiest plants to collect and save seed for. Here is some information from the Seed Savers Exchange in Decorah.
