This week, AJ Nair joined us to talk about vegetable gardening.
He serves as an Associate Professor of Horticulture at Iowa State University where his emphasis is on vegetable production. Some interesting topics included new cultivars, basic techniques, and tips to success.
He has some interesting research topics for the upcoming growing season involving growing potatoes with later planting dates and growing vegetables with chickens. Research results are usually showcased in early August with field days at the ISU Research Station- stay tuned for details!
If you're in garden planning mode, you might want to plant an extra row of two of vegetables for the Plant a Row for the Hungry Program. This is a national program with local outreach. You may need to do some research to see if this is available in your area. For example, in Ames produced is collected at Reiman Gardens on Monday mornings and then distributed to local food banks in the area. Its a chance for you to share your gardening efforts with those who need it most!
