Weed Control Tips & Suggestions

Flower Beds

In the garden beds your best bet is hand-pulling.  Water the day before or weed after a nice rain.  Consider using several weeding tools like a dandelion digger to minimize soil disturbance.  Never let a weed go to flower and, of course, mulch!  Here is a wonderful guide on weeding from Fine Gardening.

Vegetable Gardens

Keeping up in the vegetable garden is very important to eliminate the competition for water, nutrients, and light.  Here are some nice tips for weed control in the vegetable garden.  Remember, mulch is a good option in the veggie garden too - just pick something that breaks down more readily like grass clippings.

Lawns

September is the best time to work on weed control in the lawn.  Prepare now so you're ready to tackle it this late summer/early fall.  Here is some advice from Iowa State University Extension.
