You Have Been Shoveling Snow WRONG Your Entire Life!

It turns out many of us have been shoveling our driveways the WRONG way for most of our lives. We invited Dr. Traci Bush, Chair of the Physical Therapy Department of Des Moines University to tell us why people are constantly getting hurt and what we can do to avoid hazards. She had a LOT to say but here are a few highlights.

1. Warm Up

Getting up from bed to immediately shovel your driveway will make you more likely to injure yourself. Instead, take about 20-30 minutes to get going first. Run in place and stretch before shoveling. Even if you think you are warm enough, make sure you keep your body warm when you shovel. Cold air getting to your muscles is bad! This will make you far less likely to injure yourself.

2. Drink Water Instead of Coffee

Everyone, myself included, thinks drinking a cup of coffee before you start shoveling is a great way to provide energy for your superior snow shellacking, but that is a big no-no. The caffeine increases your heart rate on top of the excessive physical activity of snow shoveling. People who don't work out regularly, have a weak heart, have COPD any other conditions can permanently damage their heart or worse!

3. Grease Up And Get A Good Shovel

If you have been using the same shovel for years, it's time to rethink your hardware. Dr. Bush says it's best to spring for a nice ergonomic shovel with a plastic blade. Also, spray your shovel blade with cooking spray to make sure snow doesn't stick to the shovel making it heavier. This will also make sure the additional weight of the shovel doesn't pull your shoulder when flinging snow to the side.

4. Bonus Tips

Dr. Bush had a LOT of helpful advice. Listen to our special segment with her to hear all her advice. Your back will thank you.
