Kansas City BBQ is overrated. Is Des Moines better?

Kansas City, we certainly hoped you enjoyed your time at the top. But the Emporer has no clothes and we're calling you out. Kansas City BBQ is a rich tradition, but that's all it is. Des Moines has been working hard and we've not only passed you, but are leaving you in our dust... or smoke.

BBQ

Kansas City natives brag all the time about being number one in BBQ, but after tasting many of their BBQ options, one thing is very apparent, it's over. That, combined with Des Moines exceptional BBQ scene and it all means one thing. Des Moines BBQ reigns supreme.

BQQ professionals are clamoring to central Iowa because of locals obsession over quality. Butchers BBQ and Brews is moving into the old Guru BBQ location offering Texas Style. BBQ, which will focus on meat, not sauce, not sides. And another Texas BBQ place is set to open in Ankeny, called Taste of Texas. The team comes from San Antonio.

And these newbies are joining the ranks of legends already here, including National Award winners Smokey D's and Woody's Smoke Shack, National BBQ Celebrity Big Mo Cason, award-winning Jethros BBQ, and of course Big Al's BBQ among many others.

How Did This Happen?

We asked the Register's premier food writer, what gives central Iowa an advantage most others don't have and he told us the secret. It's all in the pork. We have incredible pork available in this region and most the other players don't enjoy the freshness we take for granted.
