We are always proud of Iowans who are doing amazing things and this lady is no exception. She routinely tours with big Broadway musicals and told us how she found success.
An Iowan touring the country with Broadway musicals got her start right here in central Iowa. Amy Burgmaier first worked for the Des Moines Civic Center right here in Des Moines, before getting to know the touring acts quite well, learning the logistical side from all the Broadway touring musicians. She also performed at local venues like the Stoner Theater.
She learned enough to finally land a role in the Broadway Musical, Catch Me If You Can, made famous by the Hollywood Movie featuring Leonardo DiCaprio. She also landed a role in Annie, which was directed by the original writer of the musical, Thomas Meehan. How amazing it must have been to work directly with this Broadway icon before his passing last year.
Burgmaier now lives in New York City where she is constantly auditioning for new roles, working with a dialect coach, vocal coach, and taking more dance lessons. When she is between shows she has a nanny job for a couple in the city. It's hard work keeping your body and voice ready for the next hot touring show. It's hard work, but it's work she loves.
She recounts how excited the work is and also how rewarding. She enjoys touring the United States, ending up in a new city every week and meeting people all over the country.
But she also loves her chances to come back to Des Moines to visit her family, especially at the Iowa State Fair, which is where we caught up with her. What dreams do you have and what's holding you back? Burgmaier is a great example of hard work paying off. You have to listen to our delightful interview with her.
