DOD is partnering for Drones that will decide who to kill - DETAILS!

The Department of Defense on behalf of the United States Army is seeking to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) Drones that will - in the words of the solicitation - "Develop a system that can be integrated and deployed in a class 1 or class 2 Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) to automatically Detect, Recognize, Classify, Identify (DRCI) and target personnel and ground platforms or other targets of interest."

In other words, these Drones will find their own targets, determine if they are friend or foe and then the machine will make a kill/no kill decision.

The DOD also wants these drones to have the ability to learn: "The system should implement learning algorithms that provide operational flexibility by allowing the target set and DRCI taxonomy to be quickly adjusted and to operate in different environments."

The last sentence is also.... interesting. It comes at Phase III and states that once fully developed, the new drones should be able to....: "Demonstrate the potential to use in military and homeland defense missions and environments."

This is all to be part of a joint venture. Once the Army joins with a private or research institution, both entities will be able to develop more technological innovation in AI drones.

The solicitation is now closed. In fact it closed on February 07 this year. What happens next? Rise of the machines?
