Changes to the way Iowa picks its judges are making their way through the State House. Right now unelected people who have a law degree present choices to the Governor. The Governor then picks one of three and if that Chief Executive doesn't like the choices, then the Chief Justice will make the pick.
Going forward if this law is signed by Kim Reynolds, there will be a bigger committee which would include people chosen by legislators (two from the majority and two from the minority in both the House and the Senate) and would give the Governor in the current situation, the opportunity to give the courts a political slant. Democrats don't like it because right now, that would mean more conservative judges.
What they are not telling you is that should they ever have similar power in the future, then a Democrat Governor will have the chance to put Liberal judges on the bench.
