The Iowa Senate passed Mandatory E-Verify yesterday despite some Democrats like Sen. Joe Bolkcom (D-Iowa City) saying it will hurt the State. “It's pretty clear that immigrants are vital to Iowa’s agricultural economy and I think this bill is going to send people into the shadows,” he said. “It's gonna make it harder for employers to find folks to work in the ag industry.”
I still find it remarkable that Democrats want to suppress wages, but there you go.
This is not the first time E-Verify has been discussed, but the issue was brought into sharp focus last year after the murder of Mollie Tibbetts. Her accused killer - Christian Bahena Rivera - is an illegal alien who was working on a farm that did not use E-Verify.
Sen. Julian Garrett is the Bill's sponsor and he said it is designed to fix a broken system. If it becomes law, businesses knowingly employing illegals will lose their State license.
Senate File 516 will now head to the Iowa House.
Will it pass?
