It was one of Governor Kim Reynolds top priorities - the restoration of felon voting rights. It passed the Iowa House with a massive majority - 95-2 - but it failed to get out of the Senate Judiciary Committee as it's Chairman, Brad Zaun, said it didn't have the votes.
“There were no conditions. That was the biggest problem with moving this bill. There were no conditions in regards to probation or who would qualify based on whatever crime or whatever they were sentenced with.”
The Governor is clearly not happy. “I am disappointed in today’s setback,” she said in a statement. “But I will not give up the fight for Iowans who deserve a second chance.”
There are calls for the Governor to restore the rights in an Executive Order.
