The USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group has been sent to Iran in what National Security Adviser John Bolton said was "a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime."
The announcement, which came last night, said: "Any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force. The United States is not seeking war with the Iranian regime, but we are fully prepared to respond to any attack, whether by proxy, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or regular Iranian forces."
Bolton added that the deployment was a reaction to "a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings" by the Iranians, but did not elaborate on what those were specifically. It is very rare for such a deployment to be announced in advance.
