US Ambassador Terry Branstad shakes hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping

US Ambassador to China and former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad is to step down in the coming weeks.

According to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, he informed President Trump of his decision in a phone call last week.

He has been in his position since 2017 which has coincided with a period of change between the US and China. There have been sanctions, tariffs and other tensions. On the upside there has been a new trade deal. Diplomatically, the Chinese Government says it is going impose restrictions on senior U.S. diplomats inside their country following a similar move in Washington DC.

When I spoke to the Ambassador last week, he was in good spirits. Overall do you think he has done a good job?
