Seems pretty obvious doesn't it? If you only require men and not women to register for the draft when they turn 18, you are practicing sex discrimination.
It's an argument that's been going on for years and now an answer might come as the Supreme Court will announce soon if they will hear the case on the Military Selective Service Act.
The US has not had a draft since the Vietnam War, but men and only men have been required to register for the draft ever since the military became an all volunteer force. Even I had to register when I became a citizen.
Clearly men and women are treated differently and the Justices are being asked to decide if that is unconstitutional.
Men who don't register can lose eligibility for student loans and civil service jobs. And that's the least of it! You can be fined up to $250,000 and it's a felony which says you can be sent to jail for five years on top of the fine if you fail to register.
