Title IX turns 50 today! Signed into law on this day in 1972 by President Nixon, Title IX of the Education Amendments Act, prohibits sex discrimination in educational institutions that receive federal funding.
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance," the law says.
But now former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, believes Title IX is under serious threat from the Biden Administration. The rumor is that Biden is going to roll back the changes she made to Title Nine including redefining what "sex" is to what "gender" is. On top of that, the DeVos rule which meant that someone accused of sexual misconduct would be presumed innocent maintaining the privacy of the accuser.
"That they would attempt to expand the definition of biological sex through a rulemaking process, it really is a bridge too far," she said. "And I hope that, and I trust that many people will raise their voices if what is rumored to be true actually unfolds."
What do you think? Are you concerned that Title IX changes will hurt biological girls and women?
