I was 12 when I got my first job. It was at Brian's Childrens' shoe store in London. It's still there (you can Google it!) so I guess I did a good job!
Here in Iowa, you have to be 14 to get a job and there are a lot of restrictions.
Now some of those restrictions might be lifted or changed under proposals in a Bill before both the Iowa House and Senate.
What would the Bill do if Governor Reynolds were ever to sign it into law? Well in it's present form it would allow 16 and 17-year-olds to serve alcoholic drinks. Right now, those servers can take your order, but cannot bring it to your table or ring it up. You may have noticed that at supermarkets too.
There are other changes including allowing them to work in meat freezers for up to six hours a day during the school year. I5-year-olds could work on assembly lines.
Not everyone is happy. There was a protest at the State House yesterday with chanting "our kids are not for sale". I find this strange, because of course parents of minors can say "no, you will not be working in a meat locker" or whatever the job might be.
Do you agree with the proposals?
