Des Moines Public Schools has lost almost 2,300 students since the 2018-19 school year and the interim Superintendent doesn't understand why.
“You’re not going to find more varied opportunities than in Des Moines Public Schools,” Interim Superintendent Matt Smith said to his audience of largely DMPS staff at Roosevelt High School last night. “Why would you leave? We need to know the answer to that, and what’s not working.” (Emphasis is mine!).
Smith said the loss of these students has created a shortfall of some $12.2 Million and so naturally that means he will be eliminating some teaching positions.
He did add that maybe for the 2024-2025 school year, they might have to consolidate some schools.
“There definitely is a need to have a conversation about where we might find opportunities to consolidate programming at schools to bring schools together,” Smith said. “We have several schools that are within a mile or a mile and a half of one another, so we have to talk about that.”
Can you help him understand why students have been leaving in droves?
