Last week I had Iowa Rep. Henry Stone in studio to talk about his Bill that would have outright banned minors in our State from having social media accounts.

As he explained, that has now been softened to make parental consent a requirement for minors in Iowa to have social media accounts.

But shouldn't that already exist without a law?

Yesterday that Bill cleared committee and it will likely get floor debate this week.

Now it's focus seems to be on stopping social media companies from collecting any data from accounts controlled by minors and puts the onus on the companies to make sure patrental consent has indeed been received for the minor to have an account at all.

“I’m a believer in rights, I don’t want to violate First Amendment rights I don’t want to violate someone’s free speech," said Republican Iowa State Rep. John Wills from Spirit Lake. "We are not going to allow social media platforms to collect data on our children. That doesn’t violate anybody’s rights. If a parent wants to give permission for a child to be on a social media platform, then that social media platform can collect information on that child."

What do you think? Do we need a law that says parents must consent for minors to be on social media?
