Iowa Democrats are endangering Iowa's status as "First in the Nation", and frankly I don't think they care.
Yesterday, Iowa House Republicans introduced HSB 245 which would require in-person participation at caucuses and make voters register with their party 70 days before the caucus.
This is in response to Democrats trying to change their caucus to a "vote by mail" event which would essentially make it a primary and force New Hampshire to act because of their own laws.
In a Tweet yesterday, New Hampshire GOP Chair Chris Ager, said "If Iowa Democrats move to primary balloting vs a Caucus, New Hampshire would move our primary ahead of that date." He included a screen shot of an email from New Hampshire's Secretary of State David Scanlan, as can be seen in the Tweet above.
"If we do nothing," said GOP Rep. Bobby Kaufmann, "and the current DNC proposal before them by the state of Iowa is adopted, we lose first-in-the-nation status period."
Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart released the following statement yesterday: "This legislation proposed by Republicans is a surprise move. It’s disappointing that Republicans proposed this bill with no input from Democrats and it is potentially damaging to the history of how Iowa’s parties have always worked together regarding the Iowa Caucuses. Iowa Democrats will do what’s best for Iowa and that means moving forward with an inclusive caucus process."
So as the Iowa Legislature acts to preserve this coveted status, do you care if we stay “first in the nation”?
