A big name is coming to Des Moines this month. Best known for her role in the largest toxic tort injury settlement case in U.S. history, Erin Brockovich is no stranger to fighting injustice, even against some of the most powerful opponents and she's bringing her tenacious spirit to the 2020 Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit.
After uncovering a 30-year long history of poisoning the groundwater in Hinkley, California by Pacific Gas & Electric, Brockovich dug in and didn’t give up until she had exposed the truth—and had gotten justice for its victims.
“If anyone knows what it’s like to face an uphill battle against a powerful industry, it’s Erin Brockovich,” said Iowa Renewable Fuels Association Executive Director Monte Shaw. “She truly is proof that one person can make a difference, and she believes that everyone—in their own way—can do the same.
“Facing EPA refinery exemptions to the Renewable Fuel Standard and trade disputes depressing markets, ethanol and biodiesel producers could use a shot of encouragement. The biofuels industry is at a critical juncture as we fight for market access. Brockovich’s inspiring message to fight against adversity and stand up for what is right dovetails with our challenges confronting the powerful petroleum industry.”
The 2020 Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit will take place at the Prairie Meadows Conference Center on January 16, 2020. The Summit is free to attend and open to the public, but registration is required.
